#056: "Traveller, there is no path"

Traveler there is no path Traveller there is no path the path is made by walking Antonio Machado beautiful illustration inspiring quote Chinese painting Oxherd Boy

On a poetry kick 🄾 Antonio Machado's "Traveller, there is no path"

Traveller, the path is your tracks

And nothing more.

Traveller, there is no path

The path is made by walking.

By walking you make a path

And turning, you look back

At a way you will never tread again

Traveller, there is no road

Only wakes in the sea.

Love the illustration. I've read a different version of this poem; difference is likely attributable to translation. This version is translated from the original Spanish by Willis Barnstone, from Antonio Machado, Border of a Dream: Selected Poems, Copper Canyon Press, 2004. The word "caminante" appears in the original Spanish, which I take to mean one who walks or travels the Camino.

"Walker"

Antonio Machado

Walker, your footsteps

are the road, and nothing more.

Walker, there is no road,

the road is made by walking.

Walking you make the road,

and turning to look behind

you see the path you never

again will step upon.

Walker, there is no road,

only foam trails on the sea.
